Acting for Sketch
Whether you are playing the straight man or the dancing gorilla who wants to be a star, taking what's written on the page and reacting truthfully in the moment is the key to an exceptional sketch comedy performance. This course will focus on committing one hundred percent to your choices for your character and in your scenework. You will learn to break down a scene beat by beat and to create a full and truthful character no matter what part you are playing in a sketch.
This is a six-week course. In that time you will learn vocal, physical and energy exercises, basic Meisner technique and how to break down written material. You will work on preparing monologue and sketches from some of the UCBT's best sketch writers. Memorization of scenes and partnered scenework between classes will be expected -- plan on 3 hours of work per week outside of class.
There will be a class show, where students will have the opportunity to perform material rehearsed in class in front of an audience.
Pre-requisites: Improv 101, Sketch 101 or comparable acting or sketch comedy experience. Only one absence allowed. Instructors must be notified of absence at least one week in advance to adjust at home scenework accordingly. If you miss more than one class, you will be removed from the course.
If you are interested in taking this class, send an email to [email protected] with the subject "Acting for Sketch 10219", by 5 pm on Sunday July 6. Please include a brief description of any acting and improv experience you have. We will review the applicants and send a notice to those who have been accepted by Tuesday, July 8.
