Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation. Core concepts covered include using character agreement to make your scenes succeed, developing character, character status, object and environment work, “playing at the top of your intelligence,†and heightening (finding ways to make your scenes get funnier from start to finish).
This course also introduces the specific vocabulary of the UCB Training Center.
This course meets for 8 sessions that are each 3 hours long. At the end of the course, students will take part in a class performance, generally held at the UCB Theatre. Graduation is also contingent upon students seeing at least two improvised shows at the UCB Theater before the end of the course.
Class Size: 16 Students

Kate Spencer, Teacher
Kate Spencer has been writing and performing at the UCB Theatre since 2002 and has studied under numerous teachers including Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Billy Merritt, Armando Diaz, and many more. She is a member of the UCBT House Team Reuben Williams, and can be seen every Saturday night in their show “As Seen On TVâ€. A member of the UCB Touring Company, Kate has been featured in numerous shows at the UCBT, including: NeoTokyo Girlcrush 2040, The Nights Of Our Lives, Found On Craigslist, B Roll, North American Sketch Championships, and The Documentary. Kate writes for Collegehumor.com and has contributed essays and articles to METRO newspaper and the upcoming book from Gawker.com. She has also appeared on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and UPN’s Get This Party Started. Kate knows for a fact that the Red Sox are the best team in baseball, no matter what anyone else says.
