Sketch 101: Sketch Comedy Writing

This course is an introduction to the UCB philosophy on sketch comedy, specifically using "the game" to write short comedic scenes. Each week students will engage in writing exercises that will explore different sketch formats. Students will be exposed to different methods for turning funny ideas into even funnier written sketches. Students will leave the class with an understanding of popular sketch formats and a portfolio of writing.
No prior sketch writing experience is necessary -- the only requirement for this class is a desire to write and learn. Students should be prepared to work outside of class, preparing sketches for presentation in every class. Students will be required to see two live sketch shows before the end of the course.

Zack Poitras, Teacher
Zack Poitras is a member of the sketch group Pangea 3000, which has had multiple shows at the UCB and performed in festivals across the country. He is a contributing writer for The Onionand writer of The Onion's GOOMF sports videos. He has been published in McSweeney's Book of Politics and Musicals. He is a member of the Harold team The Regulars. He has appeared on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon a few times, and he's been in couple commercials promoting beer and gum. He is a director, writer, and producer in UCB's Sketch Cram, and has directed the Maude Teams Dweeb, Everything Rabbits, Fambly, and Supereasy. He graduated from Boston University in 2008, and hails from Portland, Oregon. He is a son, he is a brother, he is a friend, he is another.
