Improv 301: Harold Structure

This course introduces students to the long form improvisation structure known as "The Harold," developed by Del Close.
"The Harold" is a series of scenes inspired by a single suggestion that fit together into one cohesive half hour piece. Students learn how to 1) perform openings, 2) create scenes inspired by an opening 3) perform "group games," 4) second and third beats (returning to scenes later in the piece).
Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.
Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at the UCB Theatre.
Students required to see at least 2 improvised shows at the UCB Theater before the end of the course.

Achilles Stamatelaky, Teacher
Achilles has been writing and performing improv and sketch comedy at The UCB Theatre for a decade. He improvises weekly with his group Airwolf, which performs at UCB's East Village Theatre every Saturday at 8:30 PM.
Previous shows and house teams include Harold Night (T.R.U.C.K.S., Whorenado, Penthouse Riot, and Standard Oil), Maude Night (The Prom and (212), Night Late (produces a brand-new late night talk show with a new guest every month), and the video team Scraps which produced content for UCB Comedy's YouTube Channel. He was a founding member of Hot Lather, which created "As The Diamond Burns," UCB's long-running improvised soap opera. He has also performed throughout New York City with dozens of independent improv groups.
Achilles' sketches have been featured on Splitsider, NY Magazine's "Vulture Blog," and Roger Ebert's blog. He has written for YouTube's Official Comedy channel, Plume Publishing's Coloring For Grown-Ups Series, and contributed writing to MTV2, PauliLu, and Funny Or Die.
He has also created two sold out Harry Potter-themed shows for UCB: Up Late! With Lord Voldemort! (2007) which was featured in The Gothamist and NY Magazine's "Vulture Blog"; and The Kirk Cameron Repertory Players Present: A Harry Potter Musical! (2010 and 2011), which was featured in TimeOut NY, The Huffington Post, and WNYC. He also directed, produced, and wrote for The Heisenberg and Friends Breaking Bad Variety Hour (2013), a sold out Breaking Bad-themed event. He has also directed numerous shows and groups at the theatre, including The Evente and The Word.
Achilles has appeared in commercials for Nickelodeon, Comcast, ESPN (among others) as well as various internet videos, The Colbert Report, and Broad City. Achilles is an instructor at the UCB Training Center and has been teaching since 2010. He was also the former Associate Artistic Director of UCB Theatre NY.
