INTRO TO SITCOM WRITING
This course is an introduction to the fundamentals of sitcom writing through the structure of a writers' room. Each week, students will bring in work toward a spec episode of a sitcom currently on the air. Students will leave this class with an understanding of sitcom structure, terminology, and how a professional writers' room works, as well as with a solid draft of a spec script.
NOTE: Students must come to the FIRST session with a logline for their proposed spec script (think: how the episode would be described on your DVR - just one sentence about the main storylines of the episode).
Pre-requisite: Completion of Sketch 201
Leila Cohan-Miccio, Teacher
Leila Cohan-Miccio is a New York-based comedy writer. Most recently, she wrote for too-beautiful-for-this-world NBC comedy Next Caller. She is the co-creator/writer of Vag Magazine, a web comedy that goes behind the scenes of a hipster third-wave feminist magazine. Vag Magazine has been written up everywhere from Salon to the New York Observer. Leila also wrote UCB shows Pig: A Restaurant and This Is About Smith and co-wrote The Bachelor: Romance, Roses, and Romance, a one-act play about ABC's The Bachelor, which is a normal thing to write a one-act play about. Leila is proud to have written for UCB teams High Treason, Stone Cold Fox, and The Punch.
