Improv 101: Improv Basics

All experience levels start with Improv 101
Sundays 6:30-9:30pm

Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation including: agreement, active listening, playing characters, playing truthfully and to the top of your intelligence and group mind.

Understanding the fundamentals will be achieved through exercises and scene work in class, seeing improv shows at UCB Theatre and reading the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Students are required to see at least 2 improvised shows at UCB Theatre before the end of the course.

Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.

Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at UCB Theatre.

Class Size: 16 Students

Improv 101 students are required to acquire the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual by class #2. The Manual can be purchased for non-refundable $25 at UCB Theatre, UCB Training Center NY, UCBstore.com or Amazon.com.

Betsy Stover, Teacher

Betsy Stover is excited to be in Los Angeles! She has been withthe UCBT in NYC since 1997, serving as an improviser, actor, writer, director, and coach. She's been on numerous UCBT Harold teams including COWBOT, ICE-NINE, and DECOSTER; and in a million UCBT shows, including ASSSSCAT 3000, LET'S HAVE A BALL, and the two NYC SOUNDTRACKS LIVE shows directed by, respectively, Amy Poehler and David Wain. She wrote and performed two long-running UCBT sketch shows with her comedy partner, Katty Biscone. BETSY & KATTY's eponymous debut was directed by Rob Corddry. Betsy toured nationally with the one-woman off-Broadway show, MOTHER LOAD. She also co-hosted HOT FOR TEACHER: THE FACULTY SHOW at UCB East in NYC, a free-form improv show with a rotating cast of UCBT teachers. Betsy has taught improv comedy at UCBT since 2001.

Betsy appeared in countless sketches on NBC's LATE NIGHT WITHCONAN O'BRIEN, and has starred in many television and radio commercials. She is currently working on developing original content for Nick Mom.

Betsy attended New York University and studied acting, directing,and production design at Tisch's Playwrights Horizons Theater School. Betsy studied improv with Ian Roberts, Matt Walsh, Amy Poehler, Matt Besser, Armando Diaz, Mick Napier, Joe Bill, and Mark Sutton, as well as comedy writing with Emily Spivey, Matt Besser, Ali Farrahnakian, and Joe Toplyn.
