Sketch 101: Sketch Comedy Writing
- Mondays 12:15-3:15pm
- Start Date
- Mon May 12, 2014, 12:15pm EDT
This course is an introduction to the UCB philosophy on sketch comedy, specifically using "the game" to write short comedic scenes. Each week students will engage in writing exercises that will explore different sketch formats. Students will be exposed to different methods for turning funny ideas into even funnier written sketches. Students will leave the class with an understanding of popular sketch formats and a portfolio of writing.
No prior sketch writing experience is necessary -- the only requirement for this class is a desire to write and learn. Students should be prepared to work outside of class, preparing sketches for presentation in every class. Students will be required to see two live sketch shows before the end of the course.
Class Size: 12 Students
Class does not meet May 26
Geoff Garlock, Teacher
Geoff was a sketch writer on the UCBT Maude teams Neighbor Boy, Slow Burn, The Skuntz and one of the original UCB Maude Teams, iBadger. Geoff also wrote and performed in the horror based sketch show "I LAUGHED UNTIL I DIED"and co-wrote and starred in the show "Gettin' Quaid", both of which had successful runs at the UCB Theatre.
Geoff is also co-host of the fairly popular podcast "Worst Gig Ever" where he talks to comedians and musicians about all their terrible shows and lives....IT'S FUN!!!
When Geoff is not making the funny he is usually creating brutality in music form. Geoff Garlock played bass in the hardcore band Orchid and Vice Recording artists Panthers. He also played guitar in the metal band Dark Vibe and bass in the grindcore band The Year is One, and continues to alienate the world through music.
When you lay out Geoff's life, it looks pretty good. Even though most days he feels like a glorified hobo
