Each academy class is instructor-driven. Students in this course will focus on preparing for a series of performances, whether it is an existing form or a form developed within the class itself.

The Dearly Departed

“We have gathered here today to pay our last respects and say our final farewells to…”

How often in improv do we get the chance to delve deep into the entire life of one character? All their successes and failures. Joys and regrets. Big moments and small. And, most importantly, the people they touched during their days on this earth. Their friends, parents, children, lovers, co-workers, enemies… even seemingly small relationships that left behind a lasting impact after they’ve passed. That is what The Dearly Departed form attempts.

We open at the funeral and then jump throughout the dearly departed’s life. Every performer both builds their own character and is responsible for playing the recently deceased. The focus is on emotionally important scenes (even if small), layering of connections and games, foreshadowing and callbacks, and complete group ownership of a singular character.

Students must be approved for Academy level classes to apply for a spot in this class. Students will be selected by instructor from all qualified applicants.
