Students will learn to improvise songs with an accompanist using song structures, and then by creating their own structures as they go along. We will also explore the use of music and musical theater genre elements in improvised scenes. By learning to work with and create their own rhythms and patterns, students will gain skills that they can apply to all forms of Improv. 
Does not meet September 30, October 14, November 11, or December 9.

Eric Gersen, teacher

Eric is an actor, writer, pianist and composer from New York City. He has performed at UCB with various teams on the theatre's Harold Night, and currently performs there with the Musical Improv Team "Rumpleteaser", which he directs and musically accompanies. His solo show, "Gersenality: One Man's Search for Google Greatness" is currently running.

Eric is the writer, lyricist, and composer of the musical "Seventeen Seventy-Something: A Musical Adaptation of the Conservative Adaptation of the Birth of America", which ran for a year at UCB. He is currently developing a longer version.

As a musician, Eric has played piano for a variety of comedic shows around the country. He is the Associate Music Director of the Story Pirates, and is the Musical Improv teacher at the UCB Training Center. Eric has scored music for various TV Shows in including TruTV's Impractical Jokers, as well as web series, podcasts, and videos across the internet. Also, he once played piano for Mariah Carey.
