Intro to Character Writing
In this two-part workshop, students will get an introduction to writing character monologues. During the first session, we will use improv and writing exercise to generate and discover the “game” of the character. During the second session, students will bring in a written character to perform based on the prior exercises and will receive notes on their work. (Note students will have homework between first and second session, should bring laptop or pen/paper)
Prerequisite: Have seen sketch comedy
Chrissy Shackelford, teacher
Chrissy Shackelford is a performer and writer based in NYC. She is currently a writer for the HBO series Wyatt Cenac's Problem Areas. Originally from Texas, she studied and performed comedy at ColdTowne Theater in Austin. She's a former cast member of UCBT's Characters Welcome and the Maude team, The Classic. She is currently an actor on the Maude team, Fantasy. Her solo show Diane Shangri-La Presents: Not Dry Yet ran at UCBT Chelsea in 2017 and was performed at festivals across the country. She is an actor and director with the arts education group The Story Pirates. Her work has been featured on Reductress, CollegeHumor, Refinery29, and Above Average. You can see 1/3 of her face in a crowd scene in a season 4 episode of Friday Night Lights. She can't remember which episode.
