Queer Character Workshop

This workshop will be run exactly like a rehearsal for UCBTNY's Characters Welcome house teams: each student will perform a solo character monologue and get feedback on their piece. If time permits, we'll work on fleshing out pitches for other characters as well. Your character is not required to wear a boa and kitten heels, but it is encouraged. ;)

Prerequisite: Completion of Character 101 or equivalent experience

This class is for LGBTQIA+ identifying writer/performers only.

Michael Hartney, teacher

Michael Hartney Michael Hartney is the Artistic Director of UCBTNY. He co-created the Characters Welcome house teams and has spent years on Harold Night, Lloyd Night, and Maude Night. He can currently be seen hosting Velvet Mommy’s Characters Welcome show and at ASSSSCAT 3000.

Michael was one of 2016's Comedy Central Comics to Watch, did the 2018 NBC Late Night Writers Workshop, and performed in the New Faces - Characters showcase at the 2018 Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal.

TV credits include The Break With Michelle Wolf, 30 Rock, and The Who Was? Show. He was also a staff writer on TV Land's late night show Throwing Shade. And crazily enough, Michael originated the roles of Stanley and Mr. Williams in Broadway's School of Rock The Musical.
