Writing for Video
This class will focus on writing a tight video sketch--adapting and modifying scripts to work as web videos, getting experience with different sketch video formats, and generally learning to punch up your scripts, whether one-offs or episodic. (Note: this class focuses only on the script-writing phase, not pre- or post-production.) Students will leave class with at least one script ready to produce or include in submission packets.
Prerequisite: Completion of Sketch 101
Zack Phillips, teacher
Zack Phillips is a comedy writer and performer in New York. He was head writer for Above Average and its sports site, The Kicker, for two years. With Bryan Tucker (SNL), Zack is co-creator and writer of a forthcoming comedy series for Audible and Broadway Video, starring John Cena. Zack earned a 2018 fellowship from the Screenwriters Colony, and a 2017 "Made In NY" TV writing fellowship from WGA East, where he and writing partner Natasha Vaynblat were mentored by Robert Carlock. Zack wrote and performed sketch and improv comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater for 6 years and currently teaches there. He had a 3-episode arc on Steven Soderbergh's The Knick, for no good reason. Other credits include The Onion, Clickhole, and Impractical Jokers. Previously, Zack was a print reporter in Washington DC and played D-3 college baseball. He and his wife have two daughters. www.zackjphillips.com
