Pilot Writing


In this course, you will take an idea from a
pitch all the way to a polished draft, getting feedback at each step as
you go through this tough but really rewarding process. We'll talk
about elements of a strong pilot concept, character creation, outline
structure, and how to write dialogue that sounds like it comes from a
human. And we'll do it in a supportive workshop environment where you'll
be giving feedback on other projects as you work on your own. 

This class will break down the pilot writing process into easily achieved weekly goals. You will leave with a completed draft that you can build on and use as a sample. If writing a pilot feels overwhelming, this is the class for you.




Students should have access to a computer and stable, robust internet access, webcam & microphone. 

There is work outside of class, preparing sketches for presentation in every class and viewing sketch videos. This online course uses Google Classroom and Google Meet programs to conduct live sessions with your instructor and fellow students.

Mel Cowan

Mel Cowan began performing at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in 2006, and has studied under Ian Roberts, Matt Besser, Matt Walsh, John Ross Bowie, Jamie Denbo, Julie Brister, Seth Morris, Sean Conroy and Owen Burke. He performs regularly with the long-running team Sentimental Lady and began teaching improv through UCB in 2012.

He has written for THE ARRANGEMENT and BROCKMIRE, and has sold pilots to FX and 20th Century Fox. On screen, he has appeared in shows including RENO 911!, PARKS AND RECREATION, KEY & PEELE, BROOKLYN-99, as well as a couple of horror movies and a bunch of silly commercials. He is a Texas native and a graduate from the University of Texas' film program.
