Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation including: agreement, active listening, playing characters, playing truthfully and to the top of your intelligence and group mind.

Understanding the fundamentals will be achieved through exercises and scene work in class, seeing improv shows at UCB Theatre and reading the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Students are required to see at least 2 improvised shows at UCB Theatre before the end of the course.

Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.

Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at UCB Theatre.

Improv 101 students are required to acquire the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual by class #2. The Manual can be purchased for non-refundable $25 at UCB Theatre, UCB Training Center NY, UCBstore.com or Amazon.com.


Note: Does not meet September 11. Does meet on September 18, beginning of Yom Kippur, but ends 90 minutes before sunset.

Alexandra Dickson, teacher

Alex studied improv at UCBNY, iO Chicago and The Second City Chicago and studied acting at Circle in the Square Theatre School. She improvises with The Stepfathers (Fridays at 9) and Improvised Seinfeld. She is also an actor on the sketch team Nipsey, performing two Mondays each month. Acting is her favorite thing, but she also loves her dog, reading and baking pie. www.alexandra-dickson.com
