Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation including: agreement, active listening, playing characters, playing truthfully and to the top of your intelligence and group mind.

Understanding the fundamentals will be achieved through exercises and scene work in class, seeing improv shows at UCB Theatre and reading the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Students are required to see at least 2 improvised shows at UCB Theatre before the end of the course.

Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.

Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at UCB Theatre.

Improv 101 students are required to acquire the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual by class #2. The Manual can be purchased for non-refundable $25 at UCB Theatre, UCB Training Center NY, or

Devin Ritchie, teacher

Devin Ritchie is currently a performer on Harold Night with his team Highwater. Originally from Northern California he has studied at UCB since 2011. Since then he has performed on Characters Welcome and Lloyd teams This Old House and Hotel Hotel. Devin can also be seen on most Wednesday nights hosting the musical XYZ Jam and the Improv Jam. He is a member of the queer musical team Fancy Man. Devin was a finalist for the 2015 NBC&UCB Diversity Showcase. Devin is also a teacher at UCB. And can be seen most recently in the Frankie Cosmos music video “Apathy”.
