Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation including: agreement, active listening, playing characters, playing truthfully and to the top of your intelligence and group mind.

Understanding the fundamentals will be achieved through exercises and scene work in class, seeing improv shows at UCB Theatre and reading the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Students are required to see at least 2 improvised shows at UCB Theatre before the end of the course.

Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.

Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at UCB Theatre.

Improv 101 students are required to acquire the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual by class #2. The Manual can be purchased for non-refundable $25 at UCB Theatre, UCB Training Center NY, or

Erik Tanouye, teacher

Erik Tanouye Erik Tanouye is a half-Japanese comedian who can be seen every Saturday night performing with The Curfew at the UCB Theatre in Hell's Kitchen.

He was a creative consultant for Netflix's The Characters: Natasha Rothwell episode, as well as the writer of the viral satire video "BP Spills Coffee." He has also worked on videos and series for Nerdist, IFC, and Comedy Central, and appeared on Earwolf's podcast "WOMP It Up!" as Nathan Ponsor.

He created the popular blog Song Lyrics in Chart Form ( which is now available as a book:

He has been writing and performing at the UCB Theatre since 2002, and teaching at the Training Center for over a decade.

He lives in Manhattan.
