Students will learn the fundamentals of long-form improvisation including: agreement, active listening, playing characters, playing truthfully and to the top of your intelligence and group mind.

Understanding the fundamentals will be achieved through exercises and scene work in class, seeing improv shows at UCB Theatre and reading the UCB Comedy Improvisation Manual.

Students are required to see at least 2 improvised shows at UCB Theatre before the end of the course.

Course meets for 8 sessions, each 3 hours long.

Students will take part in a class performance, generally held at UCB Theatre.



Improv 101 students are required to acquire the Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual by class #2. The Manual can be purchased for non-refundable $25 at UCB Theatre, UCB Training Center NY, UCBstore.com or Amazon.com.



Note: Does not meet December 22 or December 29. Meets on weekend of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Performance is on weekend of Presidents Day.

Matt Dennie, teacher

Matt Dennie Matt is originally from Washington state. He is a performer on the improv team Higgins which can be seen every week at UCB SubCulture. He co-founded the alternative comedy showcase COOL SHIT/WEIRD SHIT which can still be seen every month at UCB. He's written, performed, and directed numerous shows at the theatre and is an improv teacher at UCB.

Matt has appeared on MTV, IFC, Comedy Central, Above Average, and was named a "Comic to Watch" by Time Out NY.
