This course is an introduction to the UCB philosophy on sketch comedy, specifically using "the game" to write short comedic scenes. Each week students will engage in writing exercises that will explore different sketch formats. Students will be exposed to different methods for turning funny ideas into even funnier written sketches. Students will leave the class with an understanding of popular sketch formats and a portfolio of writing.

No prior sketch writing experience is necessary -- the only requirement for this class is a desire to write and learn. Students should have access to a computer and printer and be prepared to work outside of class, preparing sketches for presentation in every class. Students will be required to see two live sketch shows before the end of the course.

Class Size: 12 Students
Note: Meets during Hanukkah.

Jon Bershad, teacher

Jon is a writer, performer, and teacher at the UCB. He wrote for the Maude teams Beige and One Idiot and performed on the Harold teams Apollo, The Governess, Dr. Snake, and By the Book. He's been studying improv and sketch at the theatre since 2007 (not including a two year break while he finished up college). Outside of that, he's contributed to Above Average, Funny or Die, College Humor, McSweeney's, The Onion, and was a staff writer for the website Seriously.TV, TV sketch series The B.S. of A, the MTV pilot America's Least Wanted, and the TruTV pilot The Sexy Sex Sex Show. He is currently the head writer for the series Pop Off which streams weekly on Airtime. Once upon a time, Jon also co-wrote the musical "Zipperface!!?!: The Hobo Musical" which had a sold out run in the 2009 New York International Fringe Festival, an almost sold out run in the 2009 Fringe Encore Series, and would be totally perfect for your Off-Broadway, regional, or college theater group. Seriously. Your season ticket holders would love it. Check him out at www.jonbershad.com.
